2510 Squadrons Flight Simualtor project has started to take off! The Squadron is embarking on a long-term project to construct a flight simulator which can be used for cadet training and development; 2510 is putting the Air back in Air Cadets!
The simulator itself will be based on the F-16 Fighting Falcon (Block 50/52) which is one of the most successful jet fighters of the past fifty years. More information on the F-16 can be found here including the design and development of this incredible aircraft. The Squadron has been donated a complete set of plans for the cockpit from a semi-professional simulator builder in the United States which will enable our “pit” to have a high degree of realism as per the real-world aircaft; our thanks goes out to Penny and Jason from viperpit.org! Without their assistance, we would not be able to proceed with the project. Equally, the Squadron would like to pass on our thanks to Mike (also from viperpit.org) for his incredibly kind donation of a number of F-16 replica switch panels which will be used during the electronics phase of the project. Our thanks also goes to all of those from viperpit.org who have contributed thus far, you will all be mentioned in a further post in due course!
The project will be challenging and really push the cadets involved; the degree of creativity and skill required to build a simulator cannot be under-estimated. Not only will the cadets be operating complex computer software, they will also be improving their design and construction skills as well as a huge host of other abilities!
The quality of software we are planning to utilise can be seen in the video below:
The goal of the project is to create a simulator which can be used for elementary simulated flight training for cadets as well as more complex missions, hopefully in direct co-operation with other Squadrons in the area via a broadband internet link. Further updates of progress will be posted in this category in the coming months, so watch this space!
